Munich
A general scene of the crowd massed in front of speakers’ stand during the foundation stone-laying exercises for the new House of Art in Munich, Germany. An incident during the ceremony changed the whole complexion of the event. For the assembled thousands, Chancellor Hitler had been presented with a beautiful silver hammer as a symbol of future Nazi and German greatness - but with the first blow on the foundation stone it broke in the hand of Hitler who turned away in disappointment. The Nazis, with the superstition inherent in all men, saw in the breaking of the hammer a bad augury. Credit line (ACME) 10/24/33 Stamp: ACME Newspictures, Inc. Stamp: Ref. Dept. May 1 1934 N. E. A.
